IMCC Held an Open Lecture on Shipbroking Practice
IMC-Frank Tsao Maritime Library and Research & Development Centre (IMCC) hosted an open lecture on “Shipbroking Practice” on 10 April 2015. It was delivered by Ms. Nelly Akhmedzhanova, Director of Progress Plus (HK) Ltd. More than 20 PolyU academic staff, students as well as industry practitioners attended the lecture.
The lecture introduced practical aspects of ship brokerage and vessel chartering. The following topics were presented: the role of shipbrokers, shipbroking practice and daily routine, specialization, reward and ethics of shipbrokers, the role of a shipbroker in voyage and time-charter negotiations, claims and disputes. The presenter also introduced the recent status of the shipping market and is not optimistic about the Capesize and Panamax market recoveries since the huge unbalance. At last, the lecture compared the role of Hong Kong as an International Maritime Centre with Singapore, London and Shanghai. Students learnt the career path and required knowledge, and most importantly, the ethics of being a professional shipbroker from the lecture.
